GRAND PRAIRIE ANIMAL SHELTER—PRAIRIE PAWS ADOPTION CENTER

The Prairie Paws Adoption Center (PPAC) is a 15,000 square-foot municipal animal shelter for the City of Grand Prairie, Texas and houses the Animal Services Division. Construction began in 2002 and building was completed in October 2003. Total design and construction came in at $3.5 million. Land costs were not an issue because PPAC was built within the boundaries of 171 acres of city land.

The cistern was not a part of the original design for the PPAC, but was part of a mid-construction attempt to make the building and grounds a site for environmental education as well as pet adoptions. Schrickel, Rollins and Associates, Inc. were responsible for the cistern and landscape design, although the idea was the result of a visit by the Environmental Services Director to a McKinney Public Elementary school. McKinney schools are built with conservation in mind and have several environmental- education ideas incorporated into their design. The cistern and equilibrium tube are their ideas.

The courtyard gutters are made from aluminum and collect rainwater from roughly half of the roof surface. The building is U-shaped, with the connecting roof clad in metal for aesthetic reasons. The gutters feed into an aqueduct that connects to the cistern. The cistern was installed above grade and has a copper plate attached to the exterior with a quote from Benjamin Franklin, “When the well is dry, we know the worth of water.”
